hiatus - back to school [final year]

Currently just resumed school and am struggling to settle back in. I HAVE been practicing painting during these gaps between the recent uploads, but the recent pieces do not sit right with me - do not reach even my own standards, so they will not be uploaded. I will try to resume regular updates again, possibly with a more reasonable deadline for myself, perhaps weekly, but this is my final year, so i can keep no promises to anyone who looks at this.

doing these copies of Bakuman was also kind of therapeutic - because while doing it i understood how far i’ve come in terms of drawing, and i had picked up my copies of Bakuman to reread the day before anyway. Another reason would be that i once wanted to be a manga artist and drew heavy inspiration from Bakuman to strive and improve my drawing skills.

Personal notes + figuring out face proportions and features by copying the manga Bakuman. It’s been a while since i last touched Manga of any form, but a friend who was willing to help teach me to improve in drawing recommended i go back to doing such copying to help understand how to do it.

the two black and whites are perspective and value tests. Abandoned because i didn’t like hwere it was going. The one on the left was the initial shot, then i expanded it because i felt it was too bland.

the ones in the middle are the most recent wip ive been working on, the one on right being the first shot - i felt it was empty and was thinking of what to add, but i realised the perspective was totally off even as a tilted shot, then proceeded to rework it. Even now i’m doubtful if it’s any good and i’m probably going to hold off work on it until i get a friend to look at it.

The top one is a “cleaner” concept of the Blighted Field, which i believe i posted two other sketches/compositions down below, the composition identifiable by the same color palette i believe.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I didn’t feel much of it was even worth uploading of late. That and my friends say i overwork myself trying to improve, but i’m not so sure if i’m even doing enough.

A series of quick composition tests i have as of 3-20-2013. Spent about an hour tweaking them to a better state from rough, random brushstrokes (excluding the sinkhole city concept).

Sketchdump.

Consists of random figure sketches without reference (barely any), a sketch of one of Robin Tunney’s eyes because i’ve been studying (just lazing around really) The Mentalist, some quick studies of the human head/skull and notes plus some sketches of my take on the Ungoliant, after reading of it in the Silmarillion, particularly about a chapter or so post-betraying Morgoth for the Silmarills.
The notes don’t explain it too clear, but i have a rough baseline of what i think the Ungoliant would look like (in my mind, at any rate). What i’m typing out will also be relatively different in some aspects after rethinking what i have written.

The book does not fully describe her in detail as a spider. Tolkien says the Ungoliant is a she, and i visualized a pale, relatively beautiful woman (beautiful in a dark and terrible way), head, torso and arms.
Her long flowing hair is the Unlight webs she spins.
She owns two dusky human eyes, but the rest of her inhuman eyes are lower on her form.
Roughly around where a human pelvis would be is her black beak. This she used to consume the life of the Trees, and where the poison of her entered their drained husks. Around her pelvis is also where it connects to her spider form, and her remaining six eyes.
Below that is the spider Carapace and Abdomen, black as night.
When she lies down on her back and carapace, cradled by her own webs of Unlight, spun from her pitch black hair, there is a gaping mouth that was born from her own lust and unremitting hunger. Here, when lying down, her 8 ebony spider legs act as teeth and her.. “dining utensils”.
When she grew more massive, i envisioned the human part of her doubled in size, but what really grew was her carapace and abdomen, and with that, the mouth and her appetite only grew.
note that man had not been born at that point of time, and i am only playing around with my idea of how the Ungoliant looked like.
Her spinnerets create a web unlike her Unlight webs, for defense, webs of an acidic nature. I believe in her anger of Melkor’s refusal to surrender the Silmarils, she bound him in both webs and caused Melkor great agony that resulted in his screams.
Post Morgoth/Melkor’s escape, she ran away and hid, in the process creating other spiders of monstrous size as a broodmother of sorts, and a while later, she would move again as the area was devoid of food, and eventually she would live alone for her insatiable hunger would cause her to consume even her children.
Probably due to the increased size of her abdomen and carapace and of course, the dark magics that she was born of, allowed her to consume herself.

When thinking upon the Ungoliant’s frame of mind, i feel that it would be fairly human, intelligent, but cursed with insatiable hunger and lust. I also feel that she felt a connection to her master, but as she grew more powerful after consuming the life of the Trees, it waned and her appetite grew, and thus betrayed her former master and creator. I like to think she did like him, and she survived for a long time in regretting the betrayal, though her hunger came first, and roughly around the end of Morgoth, she heard of his demise and the

Of course, this is all just my visualization of Ungoliant. I doubt it is by any means original, and someone has thought of something similar before. The thought of Ungoliant being a.. “lover” of Melkor/Morgoth was also probably influenced by me reading too much theories made by other fans who read the Silmarillion - though i have never actually read one concerning Melkor and the Ungoliant.

To be honest Tolkien just probably imagined a great monstrous black “Elder” spider of sorts, and i’m going overboard.

But hey, i like to think i have an artistic license. of sorts.

Went to the school library, took a bunch of design books and various reference books and browsed through.

why i created this blog

This blog is created in a way as a design journal as i slowly learn and get better at it. I’ll try to update it as i go along, hopefully with some order. It’s nothing amazing as i’m still a student, but i wish to be one day become a concept artist of sorts, and as it’s likely i cannot afford to attend a school like FZD due to the 30k-ish cost for a year’s diploma, i’m trying to replace the lack of a school guiding me, with simple hard work.

I don’t think i’ll be reblogging anything on this page because i have other tumblrs i use to reblog references and inspirational material, so, yeah.

I hope you enjoy what i have to share, even if it isn’t much.

I’m writing this about a week or so after my 2nd year of school, and when this holiday ends, i’ll be a final/3rd year in my course.

During this holiday i’ll be uploading a mix of works, primarily and hopefully traditional fundamental practices with a bit of painting and sketching here and there. When the holiday ENDS, i will be updating less frequently and likely focusing more on schoolwork.
